This week, while Sarang was in dry dock at Ratho, I was introduced to something that I honestly didn’t know existed.

And I have to say, I was genuinely impressed.

A Discovery Worth Sharing

Like many people new to canal life, I’ve spent a lot of time learning about boats themselves.

Engines.

Blacking.

Moorings.

Licences.

Surveys.

But one thing I hadn’t really considered was the network of facilities available to boaters along the canal system.

While chatting with another boater, I was told about a nearby facility available specifically for canal users.

So naturally, I went to take a look.

What I found was fantastic.

More Than Just a Toilet Block

When people hear the word “facilities,” they often imagine a simple toilet block.

What I discovered was much more useful than that.

The facility included:

• Hot showers
• Toilets
• Wash basins
• Washing machines
• Tumble dryers
• Ironing facilities
• Heated indoor areas during winter

For anyone spending extended periods aboard a narrowboat, these facilities are incredibly valuable.

Not every boat has a washing machine.

Not every boat has a large shower.

And even when they do, sometimes it’s simply easier and more practical to use the facilities provided.

Access Is Surprisingly Easy

One thing that really surprised me was how straightforward access appears to be.

As I understand it, boaters can obtain a key from Scottish Canals for a very small fee.

In my case, another boater had a spare key available, so I was able to obtain one through him.

The cost is minimal compared to the convenience it provides.

It’s one of those things that every boater should probably carry.

The Laundry Facilities

Perhaps the most impressive part for me was the laundry room.

Everything was clean, organised and easy to use.

The facilities included:

✓ Washing machines
✓ Tumble dryers
✓ Ironing board
✓ Iron

And the washing machine cost was incredibly reasonable.

At around £3 per wash, it’s hard to argue with that.

For liveaboards, continuous cruisers, or anyone spending significant time on the waterways, having access to affordable laundry facilities is a huge benefit.

Winter Comfort

Another feature I particularly liked was learning that some of these facilities are heated during the colder months.

If you’ve ever stepped out of a boat shower in winter, you’ll immediately understand why that’s a good thing.

Being able to use a warm indoor facility during the Scottish winter is a genuine luxury.

It’s one of those small details that can make life afloat considerably more comfortable.

A Great Example of Canal Community Support

One thing I’ve noticed repeatedly since buying Sarang is how much support exists within the canal community.

Whether it’s advice, practical help, guidance or simply sharing information, people are generally very willing to help one another.

Without another boater mentioning these facilities, I may never have discovered them.

Now it’s something I’ll definitely be using in the future.

Worth Knowing About

If you’re already a boater and haven’t looked into these facilities, it’s definitely worth investigating.

If you’re thinking about becoming a boater, it’s another reminder that canal life isn’t quite as isolated as some people imagine.

There are support networks.

There are facilities.

And there are people willing to help.

That’s one of the things I’m enjoying most about this journey.

The more I learn, the more I realise there’s always something else waiting to be discovered.

And this week, it was heated showers and laundry facilities.

Not the most glamorous discovery perhaps…

But definitely a useful one.
