Liam Lusk - At the beginning

At the Beginning of a Narrowboat Life?

There’s a moment before any big life change where everything feels possible—but nothing is certain. That’s exactly where I find myself right now, standing on the edge of what could be the start of my narrowboat journey.

This is my second visit to a 39-foot traditional narrowboat in Scotland. Over the past year, the idea of living on the water has been quietly growing—fueled by countless videos, research, and a lot of internal debate about the realities of the lifestyle. The pros, the cons, the romance, and the reality—I’ve tried to take it all in.

Why This Boat—and Why Scotland?

Location played a big part in this decision. Since I work in Scotland and have roots here, buying a boat on the Scottish canal network makes practical sense. The network may be smaller than England’s, but it avoids the complications of distance and transport—especially since the English and Scottish canals aren’t connected.

There’s also something reassuring about being able to physically visit the boat, speak to the current owners face-to-face, and really get a feel for it before making any decisions.

A Decision Worth Taking Time Over

Today isn’t about rushing into anything. It’s about asking the right questions, taking a closer look, maybe capturing some photos and videos, and most importantly—giving myself space to think.

Excitement is definitely there, but so is caution. This is a significant commitment, not just financially but personally. I want to leave with clarity, not impulse. If things move forward, I’ll make sure it’s with confidence rather than uncertainty.

More Than Just a Financial Choice

On paper, this isn’t an immediate money-saving move. In fact, it’s likely the opposite—at least in the beginning. Financing the boat will probably mean higher short-term costs than my current living situation.

But this isn’t purely about finances.

After returning to the UK less than a year ago following over two decades abroad, one thing has become clear: the cost of living is relentless. It feels like a constant cycle of outgoings, with little breathing room.

This potential move is about something deeper—stepping away from that cycle. Moving away from conventional living. Searching for a slower pace, a bit of calm, and a different way of experiencing day-to-day life.

A Personal Journey (For Now)

This video—and now this post—is as much for me as it is for anyone else considering a similar path. It’s a way of documenting the uncertainty, the excitement, and the decision-making process that comes with such a lifestyle change.

I don’t yet know what the outcome will be. Maybe this boat becomes home. Maybe it doesn’t.

Either way, this feels like the beginning of something worth exploring.

I’ll share more once I’ve had time to reflect and decide what comes next.
